Just wondering how Teak Guard performs. We're tired of varnishing and looking for an easier way to maintain exterior brightwork. We were originally thinking of using teak oil, but Teak Guard sounds great. Apparently, you can apply the stuff in 40-degree weather and get a jumpstart on the season. Thanks.

I've been using it for over 7 years and love it. It's water based so it doesn't darken like oil does. It goes on with a foam brush, cleans up with a damp rag should you get it on the gel coat and maintains the natural golden color of the teak all season long. It soaks into the teak so unlike Cetol or varnish the teak doesn't become slippery when wet. If you decide you don't care for it, just allow it to fade away. Since it's water based it won't leave a residue that will interfere with other products. The only caution is to keep it from freezing or it will ruin it. When you wash the boat you'll find that some residue from it but it will rinse away and not stain anything. It's definately well worth the money.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. This is probably a stupid question but when do you have to prevent Teak Guard from freezing? When it's in the bottle or on the wood? I'm sure you mean that since it's water-based, it can't be allowed to freeze in the bottle. To answer the other poster, Teak Guard seems to only be offered online at their Web site, www.teak-guard.com. Apparently, it is an Australian company. If anyone knows where you can get it in the States, please let us know. Thanks again.

Re: Thanks

You have to keep it from freezing in the bottle or it turns to a bubbly gel like mix and is ruined. I get mine via their website as you have listed. One thing I failed to say is reapplying the next season is just as easy as the first time. Clean the teak to get the dirt out and reapply. I've never seen anything so easy to use, lasts as long as it does and looks so good. I really am amazed at the stuff. We have a new boat and I plan on applying it once she's back in the water. BTW a bottle of it goes a long way. Usually lasts me 3 seasons and that was covering all the seating area in a Beneteau 361.

Teak Guard

Here's a picture of the teak taken 9-5-2008. I had cleaned and applied it in the spring. You can see it still has nice color (which is natural, no hazy look like Cetol) to it after 5 plus months. I don't so anything but wash it with soap and water while cleaning the boat.

Here is the 800 number

Teak guard is the best product for teak that I have used. It is very easy to use and the clean up is with water. It dries very fast and you can put three coats on in a day. I have been using about 8 or 9 coats for a finished job. After the first two or three coats use very little product on the wood. A little goes a very long way. You do not want it to run and dry. Remember that if you want more on the wood put on another coat, not a heavy one. The number to order is 800-325-6070. This is the number for the Marine Store. Nice people to do business with. Hope this helps.

Anyone using Teak Guard **from Australia** (different company, different product)? Supposedly this product employs nanotechnology to prevent UV, etc. destruction of teak, etc.

Seems similar to the absolutely WONDERFUL product used by the mega-yachts and commercial passenger liners for their teak decks before the removal of Fluoro-Phosphates from the marketplace. Allowed the decks to 'wet-out' (with water) so that there was no traction loss; yet, kept the decks from oxidization and UV surface destruction.

Rich, I checked the labels and the product I'm using is from Ohio, but has all the same qualities your mentioned. Not sure if these guys are importing and relabeling it or have come up with their own concotion. Either way it works great. There are two sites that lead to the same product.

I called Ohio.
The owner of the company said the Australia folks "stole the name".
Then he said he bought the Ohio company from a friend sometime around 2000.
He will sell the stuff direct, as his fla distributors don't show it on their web sites.
His web site implies not to ship it when or store it if it's < 32 degrees.
I'll wait til April to buy.
