We're about to view a 1990 Catalina 42 Mark I with modifications (deeper keel and rudder, upgraded winches, etc., etc.) Are there any "Big boat" owners out there who have any recommendations, thoughts, gotchas, etc. regarding a Catalina 42 MkI? Thanks in advance, Skipper Tom and "Admiral" Jeanne Marie

Very Interesting

Tom, looks like a nice boat. Mk I C-42 were originally equipped with what is known as the "barn door" rudder. At the time the boat you are looking at was built, Catalina was using the same rudder on both the shoal and deep fin versions. At about hull #480 the rudder on the deep fin boats was changed to to the deep elliptical rudder. The boat you are considering looks like it has the factory deep fin keel, and the newer ellipical rudder. Mk I owners often make the change to the newer rudder. The Catalina factory gladly assists owners who wish to upgrade the rudder. Be aware that the draft is closer to 7 feet on fin keel C-42s. While she is out of the water, a quick check with a tape measure will confirm the actual draft. And, as Bert suggests, visit the C-42 website at the link he provided. C-42s generally survey well with not many "gotchas". We've owned ours for 5 years with absolutely no problems... and we live aboard and sail a lot. I crewed on a C-42 in the Pacific Cup - a race from SF to Oahu, Hawaii and we placed third in our division. I am biased but I think these are great boats.
