I bought this on Blueray a while back and it is breathtaking to watch. Here is a preview of it. It is called The Chesapeake Bay by Air. It was done by Maryland Public TV so it doesn't go into the southern bay, Tangier Island, Etc. Still, the footage was amazing.

For you all who have never sailed the bay, eat your heart out!

Too late. We already want to. The video does make us glad we have a trailer-sailor. Thanks for sharing!

If you can ever catch the entire DVD or BluRay do it! It is so beautiful!

Hrm...When do you plan to do down to the Chesapeake? I am going to be out there for 10 days starting September 19th!

No plans, just wishes. But "If wishes were fast trains..."

First read Mitchner's Chesapeake while anchored in St Micheal's, years ago, where he wrote it. Been back twice since over the years.

First place I EVER saw crab fishing with a trot line !!

In love the Chesapeake. You could spend a life time and not find all the neat spots.

Growing up in Bayou Country, the trot line is what we did every weekend. Stop by the back door of the grocery store and see if they had any expired chicken.... Sometimes we would put a hook or two on the line as well and catch a sand shark for the pot as well....

Mr. Mitchner set up camp in a room at the Robert Morris Inn on the Oxford, MD waterfront where he partook of the succulent lump-crab cakes and took in the distinctly local Log Canoe Sailboat races...from last week:

Spent several years on the Chesapeake. Learned to sail, crab, and flounder fish. Caught softshell and bluefin off the boat with a dip net. Boiled in pot with Old Bay. Thinking about it makes my mouth water.. Only issue is you could be 2-3 miles from shore and run onto a sand bar in the South Bay. So you sailed near the shipping lanes or in light boats with kick up centerboards. Lot of fun.
Now I get to sail big water, where the depths are beyond the range of the finder 100 yards from shore. You can set your course by an Island or Mountain top in the distance. The country side is ever changing and some times your the only person there for 25 miles.
What a great activity this is. So much the same yet so different.

I can remember fishing the Chesapeake as a youngster with my dad. We were maybe half mile to shore. While motoring to the fishing grounds, we hit a part from a sunken barge. Water came gushing in from the large hole in the bottom of the boat. I was wondering if I bought the farm. My dad jumps off the boat and water is up to his waist. Big releaf. Eventually towed to shore.
Now I sail the PNW. I had a guest on board from Isreal who sailed the Mediteranian to Greece and said the PNW is even more beautiful.

I've been sailing the Chesapeake for over 40 years. I never get tired of its beauty and diversity. I feel truly lucky to have such a grand sailing ground so near....

This past Saturday in Southern Chesapeake Bay off Ft. Monroe. Got lucky to get my phone and snap the last of a 20-30 sized pod that was taking turns playing in the bow wake 2 or 3 at a time. We were on a broad reach going steady 4.2 knots.

Is that a fashion statement or sea nettle swim wear? Is it available at finer stores?

THAT pic of the kids shows them dressed up... as per Eastport/Annapolis standards. How can you tell??? They are wearing SOCKS!

Anti-nettle wear. The kids wanted to get wet, so they raided Dad's locker. It was a good day.

Seeing Dan's photo of a dolphin in Hampton Roads reminded me that we are seeing dolphins way up the bay. In 35 years of sailing the bay this is new stuff. There was always the friendly dolphin that came out to greet us as we came in to Deltaville (down bay), but now we see our little mammal buddies way up the bay. A couple of years ago we had one ride our bow in the Eastern Bay. Here is a pod of 6 or so small dolphin (5 ft) pushing past Holland Point on their way north. This is 20 miles south of Annapolis! I attribute this to an ever cleaner bay, with a healthier fishery and restrictions on commercial menhaden extraction. Seeing some monster rockfish cows too!

Thanks for sharing. That picture should win first place in any photo contest.

I saw several groups off Chesapeake Beach in August. There was disbelief at first, and then doubletakes when I pointed them out. The frequency is certainly rising! I'm also amused that I don't give bald eagles a second look anymore on the Little Choptank River. Common place. I had one sit on the head of my chute and eat a fish!

Interesting...I am wondering if these pods are establishing themselves in the middle bay. Typically dolphins live together as extended family units within a territory. When we sail south offshore we often have distinct pods swim and play with us, then disappear a few miles later to be replaced by a new pod. Amazing creations.
