Not sure of the importance to recreational sailors but will add to accuracy after all the data is loaded into chart database especially coastal areas.

Interesting. Once I zoom in to a certain degree the screen goes gray, but all the lines are still visible. I have no idea what the map is showing me.

It is cool, https://www.teamsurv.com started this some years ago. I guess you have an ap on your chart plotter that kicks the data back home corrects for tides and averages many data points to get a better picture of the sea floor than a survey vessel every 2 or 3 decades.

How interesting. I assume the lines correlate to traffic areas, but there is no traffic in the Southern Indian Ocean around the Kerguelen Islands. I think I've found a new place to add to my bucket list of destinations to sail to.

sounds like a 'point of view' . I'm sure, whoever is "not" traveling in that area thinks "not" recording data for the region, has a valid reason. They also think they have a valid reason for keeping their moonbase a secret. But, if I could, I'd still go and check it out.

The green lines are hydrographic survey track lines using multibeam sonar. This is crowd sourced data coming from a variety of sources, private sector, UNOLS vessels, GEBCO, government agencies, education institution oceanographic research projects. There may be a valid reason for that.

Indeed. The Indian/Southern Ocean there is among the world's nastiest patches of water. Rich Wilson (American Vendee skipper) said that he hates it there, and that most of the other skippers agree with that sentiment.
