I am considering buying my first sailboat. I have seen a 27' O'Day but it is a 1972 model. It has a fin keel. Owner recently added speed log, compass, depth finder VHF, stereo system. He paid $15,000 for it a couple years ago and is asking at least that much if not more. I want to live on the boat on weekends and further my sailing skills. Should I be worried about the year of the boat? Owner said sails were in very good condition, has a 10 horse electric start motor. Owner is 70 years old and wanting to get rid of this boat as he has two. Other is a 26' Luger slooped rig he wants $6,000 to $11,000 (not sure yet) for it. Not sure whatyear it is. Thank you for any help.

Older Boats

There is no particular reason an older boat cannot be as sound as a newer one if it has been maintained meticulously. The hull itself is unlikely to deteriorate and can generally be remedied if there are any issues. You really need the advice of a surveyor to assist you with assessing your find. Only then will you know if there are problems that are worth reconsidering the purchase. Here in Maine $15k is steep unless the boat is absolutely pristine, perfect sails, diesel engine. Great Boat, bad price

I have a 77 O'Day 27 & it's a great boat (different layout down below from yours) Sails really well, but if yhou plan to stay on it, you need an inboard to keep up the batteries. I had to do a lot of work on mine, but I paid les than $4000 for the boat. $15,000 is nuts. There are some good reviews of the boat on this site.

Great boat, price is NOT

My 1974 O'Day 27 is a great boat! I bought it with no major problems. Interior is teak throughout. 13 hp Volvo diesel is solid. 2 head sails and 100%, 135% and 150% jib sails. I only paid $2000 (OK, I was at the right place at the right time, but $15,000 is TOO MUCH). Jim Cook "Dream Chaser"

thick hull

Older boats have thicker fiberglass because at that time they under judged its strenght. A good thing. 15K, wow. Maybe 5. comes a time Amherst, NH

You can get a lot more boat...

than that for fifteen large! A decent 272LE will only set you back that much and it'll have an inboard diesel, pressure water, wheel steering, etc. The old 27s are nice boats (properly maintained) but this guy is WAYYYYY out of line with the price. Check the owner reviews on this site before you do anything. Another great resource for price information is www.yachtworld.com. Here's a link below to my web page for my 272LE so you can get a decent look at one. Cheers, Bob
