Thinking about it

I'm thinking of installing a basic Adler Barbour refrigerator unit in my 1988 Hunter 30 icebox. Has anyone done it? Does anyone know if it would work to locate the compressor in the Starboard cockpit locker or starboard transom locker? There's lots of space there, and its probably cooler than inside the cabin. Any thoughts appreciated.

Works fine

I have a Norcold refrigeration unit with the compressor mounted in the starboard locker, low on the inside of the "transom" bulkhead. The battery charger is also in there. Works fine on a '89 H30, similar to your boat. Access is a little bit difficult.

Andy, I have a 88 30. I put the compressor unit on a small shelf down in the stbd cockpit locker. Cut a hole in the bulkhead to the aft locker to match the blower discharge. This allows good air circulation throughout all four locker compartments. Because I have a big bimini over the cockpit the temperature stays pretty low in these compartments. I added sea water cooling but would not do it again as the temp does not get that high with this setup even summer in FL. My unit has not been turned off for 5 years. The battery chargers takes care of electrical load on the batteries. Be sure to insulate the refrig lines with neoprene tubing to prevent sweating in the boat. The evaporator is located in the rear of the box with the tubing routed out the back, behind the stove, and under the rear bunks. A little bit of trouble but ranks right behind the autopilot as can't live without. Frank Walker
