Thinking about getting a smaller wheel for our 36 mk ii.

We purchased Boundless last labor day. Had her out numerous times until we had her put up for the winter. The one thing that we found most difficult and frustrating was moving from behind the wheel to handle sheets. The wheel is a 42 inch diameter. Thinking about installing a 32 inch wheel for more freedom of movement from the helm to the sheets. Has anyone made this modification and found it easier to move about the cockpit?

After years of being frustrated by the same problem, I purchased a Lewmar folding wheel. I love it. In addition to folding it has a leather covering, which on colder days it is much more comfortable to hold the wheel.

It will cost you about double the cost of a new 32" wheel, the extra has been worth every penny.

Santa may be looking for suggestions. ;)

If access to the running rigging is your goal, you might also consider leading it aft within easy reach. Not sure how much a few inches more access on either side of the wheel buys you. Your access will still be somewhat impeded by a wheel.

Movement past the wheel even when at anchor can be difficult.

A smaller wheel can help. The compromise is that the smaller wheel is more difficult to reach when sitting on the cockpit combing. The smaller wheel can be more difficult to turn and not as sensitive to make small corrections to the helm.

Additional ideas could include a folding wheel, or additional supports to grab as you move past the helm.

I added a 3 post binnacle guard at the helm of my boat. It provides additional hand holds to grab as I move about the cockpit and step up on the cockpit bench.

There is also the argument that you stand infront of the helm when handling the boat. Utilize the autopilot to steer, placing you in position to more easily tend to sail trimming duties.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm passing the information on to Santa. One by one to prevent sticker shock.
