You gotta love project creep.
The '79 Albin Vega I'm refitting has one small spot on the transom where the gel coat was getting thin. It's quite good and thick almost everywhere else. No problem says I, I'll just do a spot repair. But precisely matching the hull color is vexing me, and with each unsuccessful attempt I'm doing a larger and larger area. So I'm thinking about just re-doing the whole transom and be done with it. I want the transom nice, since that's what other boats will see the most of.
I've done a good bit of small gelcoat spot repairs with waxed Evercoat one-step from Jamestown, and a variety of applicators, from a Q-tip to a 2" foam roller to a Preval sprayer. But this is a larger area. Should I invest in a "real" spray gun? If so, any recommendations on a gun? I don't want to spend more than I have to, since I'll probably never use it again, but I also know the perils of spending too little. I could use a foam roller, but something tells me it will have a special set of problems over an area this size.
