We are planning on stopping by the Thimble Islands during a 4-day cruise this summer. Does anyone have recommendations on good spots to drop anchor or areas to avoid (rocks, etc...). How challenging is it to navigate through them? We have an '82 Catalina 30 with 25 h.p. universal and will be towing a 10' inflatable. Thanks for any comments!

Great Place

The Thimbles are a great choice. There is an anchorage on the east side of High Island. It's been a while since we have been there so check the guide books and charts. Area is well marked just be sure to be careful to watch the markers. There are several private moorings some of which are in very shallow water at low tide - a buddy of mine picked one up and just made it out in time. Take your dingy or kyack and explore, don't forget the camera, it's very pretty - a little piece of Maine in LI sound. I usually get a slip for the night at Brewer's Bruce and Johnson Marina in Branford just a short ride to the west. They have a pool and resturant and has always been a good spot for us to stop. If you decide to do the same be mindful of the channel, on either side are many bolders. None of this is difficult you just have to watch the charts and markers. Have fun and enjoy. A Little Piece Of Granite With Water

The Thimble Islands are great. As Rick said get up to date charts and motor slowly. Channels are pretty well marked, but make sure you are anchored well for the night. There is not a lot of protection should the weather change suddenly so listen to the forecast. Enjoy you will have a great time John
