The winch that won't

Ahoy all. I have a 1984 C-22 and I am having trouble with the keel winch. It will crank up great but I am having trouble cranking it down. It will turn fine untill it reaches about 3:00 and then it wants to stick. If I force it past this point iworks great till it gets back to 3:00 then it sticks again. Any suggestions?Art <(((><

Winch

Had a similar problem with mine. Replaced it with a new winch. What an amazing difference.I purchased my winch from www.northerntools.com at a considerable savings over Catalina Direct, but it came with an 11" handle. Fortunately, I have a welding machine, so I just cut the handle to fit. David

What is it sticking on?

My '75 C-22 had the winch handle hitting on the inner port side hatch moulding. I took a rasp, filed the wood down until the handle cleared the wood without hitting. I then sanded and re-finished the wood. Is it possible that your cable has a kink? Check those two possibile fixes before buying a new winch.

Sell It!

Sell that swing keel boat and get a fixed fin or wing keel C22. We don't worry about winches and cables and shims and pins and pivots and all that stuff! ;-) Randy

time for a new winch

Art it is time for a new winch but you need the correct winch. The Catalina has a winch with a double clutch to stop run away in both directions these are keel winchs that are special and the only safe way to handle the problem is to spend the 90.00 and buy the winch from catalina or catalina direct.  Did it this year my self and am very happy that i did.
