In 1942 three midget submarines armed with torpedoes made their way into Sydney Harbour to launch an attack on Allied warships. They were sent by the Imperial Japanese Navy

I can't listen to the whole thing but this is a good opportunity to thank all Veterans for their service and to wish them a peaceful and happy Veterans Day. BTW the Martin County Sailing Centers is giving free 1 hour sails for Vets today. I'll prolly be down there to help out. I'm happy to see Vets getting their due tribute in recent years. I remember when they could barely muster a parade in NYC.

When I saw the heading, I suddenly was reminded of the Port Chicago disaster.

The massive explosion on July 17, 1944, at the little-known Bay Area Navy base named Port Chicago, might not even register on the history radar for most people. But for William Ross, 92, the disaster is still as close as a cup of coffee.

We have a current similar facility known as the:
Naval Magazine Indian Island, WA
up here in the Puget Sound. It is just as isolated and good fortune has blessed it with safe practices since 1941. It is across the bay from Port Townsend and Port Haddock I have passed it often and kept the required 500 yards (plus a healthy cushion) away to the west of the port.

I love that active military get to board airplanes early, and get treated like royalty at restaurants, etc. When I flew home from Southeast Asia, I was ordered NOT to wear my uniform in public, especially on civilian airliners.
