I had customers, friends e-mailing me and raving about a thing called the "Scumbuster" from Black and Decker. It is battery operated, high torque and even works under water. Unlike a regular buffer, it does not rotate fast enough to "sling" off polish etc. So I bought one at our local Home Depot (cost about $45.00 in HI, but about $30 something on varioius website. It comes with 3.5 vold battery that is sealed in with O rings so that the whole outfit is waterproof. It comes with a full array of brushes, scuff pads and a polish applicator. This is what I was able to confirm: 1. On carpet, the softer brush with supplied carpet shampoo is great at removing stains etc 2. On non-skid, use of elbow grease is eliminated by use of the appropriate brush attachment 3. It is PERFECT to applying Simply Brilliant Superwax or Superglaze, evenly and sparingly and makes it dry faster. You just apply the stuff to the sponge application pad. 4. I am told (but did no try yet) that it is great for removing weed from below the waterline. Problem is- you have to reach over the side or sit in a dinghy to to the sides. Hence the Willis Pole!! I got a piece of 11/4 inch PVC high pressure water pipe (white) and used a dremel tool to carve out a socket area to fit the handle of the scum buster. A small piece of the removed area was fashioned into a "cap" to go over the inside of the handle. I then waxed and siliconed up the handle area and applied some dabs of Silicone based "household glue" and used a hose clamp to hold the handle in place. Result? I can reach the entire side and half the transom of my boat from the dock. I applied a full coat of Superglaze over the old Superwaxed surface (from 3 years ago- still beads water but getting dull). It took about 25-25 min (battery only lasts half hour!). For those interested, I am drawing up plans of the cut-out area. I am now working on a telescopic version with a remote batter compartment at the human end of the pole. Then I don't have to remove the scumbuster to change batteries/ Don't know if this is work selling (lots of labor to make) or just giving out the plans on the net. Perhaps B&D would be interested. Anybody else out there using this great little machine? I am now seeing how good itis is for generl hull cleaing and other uses. I hear that it makes a great back massager too! Thanks Jim Willis

How about trying it on non-skid sealant...

...application. I would welcome anything that makes this job easier or quicker.
