The saga is over

The saga is over but not without some additional twists and turns.

I installed the new Attwood Sahara 500 pump which is the same case as the 750. Output was a bit anemic but I didn't think that was a problem since I'm usually pumping less than a gallon.

First night of a cruise two days later, I heard a sound I first thought was a boat propeller. When it didn't stop, I looked in the bilge and found it full of water with the pump running continuously and nothing coming out the transom. Float switch working perfectly as verified by using the hand pump that draws from the same sump. Disconnected and blew through the discharge line: clear.

I spend the whole cruise hand pumping the grey water. No big deal except on the rainy day since the pump is in the cockpit.

When I got home, I removed and hooked up the pump with clear plastic hose and verified that it won't lift as high as from the keel sump to the top of the loop in my bilge system. Evidently, it would right out of the box but not after a couple days in the bilge environment. I took the impeller guard off the pump to be sure it was clean and clear.

Hamilton, with their usual great service, took the Attwood back even covered with slime and with my screws epoxied to the float. They don't carry the 750 so I ordered one on the Internet. I put it in this morning and everything works just like it always did.

I now suspect that there was nothing different about the model 500 I bought. Since it was operating right at the limit of its static lift, a marginal float switch design may have only shown a problem in that situation. They insist service history has been good.

If I were doing it again or, if I ever redo my bilge, I'll probably go to a manual diaphragm pump in the galley for the gray water. Being able to just plug another Attwood into the already mounted strainer was essential not to turn this into a major rebuilding project involving all my pumps, however. For now, everything is as has worked very well for three years.

Clearly. Static head and flow rate are intimately connected. Flow drops as lift increases. If I had thought how high the lift is from the bottom of my keel where the sump is to the top of the loop before the discharge, nearly 7 feet, I wouldn't have purchased the 500 pump. But, I was in a hurry, leaving the next day. The Attwood 500 is pretty wimpy but, to be fair, they recommend it for boats only up to 17 feet. Few boats that size would have enough lift to cause it a problem. Since this was for gray water service, which is size independent, I didn't give the size recommendation a thought.

FWIW......after many failed bilge switch's that don't sit to comfortably in the bottom of my skinny bilge I finally found an electronic switch thats been holing up pretty well and installation was mounting the switch to a 3/4 pvc pipe with tywrap so I can adjust the height easy and mounting the pvc at the top of the bilge so I'm not trying to set screws blind with my hands way down in the bilge
I like the belts and suspenders idea with a second bilge pump so thats on top of the project list

I must have missed something. If the defective pumps cleared the bilge but continued to run dry (ie defective switch), then it seems that capacity was not the issue. How does your find explain why the pump kept running? Is the internal float somehow not independent of the outflow stream of the pump? By the way, I'd love to hear more of an exposition of Long's Law!

I finally found an electronic switch thats been holing up pretty well ..
This is a gray water sump which often gets a lot of soapy water and some grease. I have heard that the electronic switches often fail to turn on under these conditions. It's a nice feature for a regular bilge as it can keep oil from being pumped overboard but I haven't wanted to try it with my dish and shower water without more information.

The soap may also have been an issue with the Attwood 500. It worked fine when I tested it with clean water and the sump had just been cleaned when I put it in. Once there was some soap in the water, the impeller straining at the limits of it's lift capacity may have cavitated.
