The Tanks are Out!

Well I finally got down to the marina this morning and cut the tops off the settees and removed the water tanks. I thought a sabre saw would be enough, but ended up using a skillsaw (circular saw) because the glass was reallt thick in a few places. I was surprised to find plywood sandwiched between the fiberglass. Cutting with the saw made a huge mess (my wife is already complaining that I got "HER" boat dirty). I cleaned the aluminium tanks last year as best I could, but today when I got them out and sloshed the water that was left inside it turned a horrid pea green. Not something I'd want to drink. Now to order new tanks from Ronco and get them back in. By the way, the job was a breeze. No problem at all, except for the scratching I'm doing now from the fiberglass.... Great photo essay.

Way to go Ron. This should give the rest of us the confidence to tackle the job when the time comes. Can't way to see the next phase. Will you lose capacity because of the shape of the new tanks? Are you still going to move the starboard tank aft and place a holding tank in the forward settee location? I notice that you did not make the cut all the way back to the sink.

I won't know about capacity until I talk to Ronco. Didn't need to cut all the way back to the sink to get the tank out. The new one should drop in and slide back into place. Still planning on putting the holding tank in front of the water tank. Ron

Thanks and a question!!

Ron, Thanks for the great pics and incentive to tackle this problem. I have been contemplating it for a while but not had the gumption to try it. I want to take my tanks out and install several smaller tanks(2-20/25 gallon on each side) with a manifold so I can store smaller amounts for weekends but keep the overall capacity for when I want to do longer cruises. Did you post an address for where you ordered your tanks from? I have several addresses but would like to know from first hand experience that the tanks fit. Frank SV *Stargazer

Frank, the address.

Ron has been looking at Ronco tanks, Related Link below. Their e-mail is roncoinc@aol.com. There is a problem though with the shape of the tank area. See the picture to see what I mean. You will need to make some cardboard templates to see what rectangular sizes you can get in there. Three or four tanks makes a lot of sense. I may do that if mine ever need replacing. Go to the Ronco site and click on "Tank Search". Then try some different sizes to see what dimensions and shapes are available. They do make some with rounded or sloped sides for fitting against the hull. Let us know how you make out. Thanks go to Ron for the photo.
