The Starboard List

Most Hunter 34's have a slight starboard list. In our 1984 we have added AC, Refigeration all on the starboard side making the problem worse. One proposed solution has been to remove the port water tank and move the three(3) batteries in to this compartment and install a smaller water tank. Looking for any thoughts or advice.

What Weighs More

You can weigh the batteries, and then figure the water weight, keep the heavier item. 30 gallons times 4 is 120 quarts, times 2 equals 240 pounds of water?????

Starboard list

Had a boat sometime ago (not a Hunter) with the same problem. An easy solution is to add weight on the light side. I used sheet Lead, available at Roofing or Masonry supply house. Just make sure that it is strapped down really good. Don't want it flying around! Lead is available in sheets of 25 lbs, or 5 lb ingots, or try your local dive shop for weights for belts!

weigh movement

A couple of things I did on our 34. Moved the holding tank from the settee to the V berth. Had to remove the drawers under the berth to accomplish this. Then moved the batteries to the old holding tank location. Installed vent to overboard to vent battery compartment. This gets the battery weight down low near the keel. It also gets some weight out of the aft and into the bow. That helps with performance, as once the crew is added to the cockpit, it tends to sink the aft end. We now have zero list. Our plan is to next remove the bulkhead in the stern cabin under the cockpit, and make the berth go side to side. That will require moving the fuel tank to the rear of the boat, behind the rudder tube. Looks like this is not too bad, and will probably buy a new fuel tank to match the space. This will also help the starboard weight problems. Dave

had the same problem. i was also adding two more batteries at the time (total now is 4)i place them forward of the water tank on the port side. make sure to get the proper cable size if you intend to have them this far from everything else.

Invite a large friend

Probably the cheapest solution is to invite a large friend to go sailing and insist that they stay on the port side of the boat :)
