The perfect sailboat

having never sailed, but ithinkican, I have entered the " almost ready to sail, needs new owner" dimension.
Driving some distance to see my prospective "New" to me trailer launchable sailboat, I find my expectations challenged. Maybe if I borrowed the owners rose colored glasses, and brought a chainsaw to get through the jungle grown up around the boat, ( Yeah, sailed er last season), arrived with 4 tires, a welder ( I never noticed the belly of the trailer was dragging on the ground)
and a road building crew. ( yeah, I got er out here no problem, but the field is a little soft this year), and a drill to get the standing water out of the hull (green) I doubt the sails usable ( left on the mast so they wouldn't crease, or dry out) for maybe 10 years? Then the yellow jackets launched the attack, and every man for himself.
I am not discouraged , and am going to look at a "Perfect" Hereschoff (?) designed 21' offshore bluewater ketch, owner added second mast.
Wish me BonVoyage!

Be very cautious when you look at this boat. Not having sailed before, you may not know what to look for in terms of sailboat rigging, sails, and hardware. This extra mast needs to be examined carefully for structural integrity. Good luck! Post pics if you have questions or concerns. Someone will have been there before.

If all that didn't discourage you there probably isn't anything that can. "You've got it bad, and that ain't good," to twist a lyric from Louis Armstrong. Best of luck.

Take a lot of pictures and post here. Many experienced boat buyers who will help you spot problems.

I would be very suspect of owner installed second masts. There are numerous errors one can make adding that mast, the result of which will be a boat that is not seaworthy.

The difference between a ketch and a yawl is the location of the mizzen mast. A yawl has the mast aft of the rudder, the ketch in front. If this is a ketch, the main sail and boom must have been very short to begin with or shortened to allow room for the mizzen mast.

A 21 foot blue water boat is going to be heavy and slow, not much fun to sail on the light airs on Lake Ontario.

Count this inspection as a learning experience.

Just being able to lay eyes on a Hereschoff is an amazing opportunity; you'd be the luckiest man ever to own one!

Thanks, the first 25' oday is perfect. Unfortunately,it is a 5 hour drive away, and with foreign exchange at 30%, and border tariffs, a little over my budget. But very nice!

It might be Halsey Herreshoff design, a lot more common and not nearly the pedigree. He did lots of boats in 20 foot range. When some just says a 'Herreshoff' design, they usually mean Halsey.

He said of a Hereschoff design. Too new to be built by Mr. H. himself.

Yes, that is true. I saw an 18 footer in Boothbay Harbor, Maine when I went on vacation there earlier this year. My family were aboard a 45 foot schooner named Lazy Jack, and the captain told me about Halsey buying the original designs and reproducing them himself in a smaller range. However, I haven't heard of Halsey producing larger boats; if he is, I'll be taking another vacation soon!

I know. My point was when people normally talk reverently about a Hereschoff design, they are talking about Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. He revolutionized yacht design. Halsey (his grandson) was a capable designer but of much more pedestrian craft, like the Chrysler 22 and the Starwind 22.

I have personally laid eyes on this boat a few months back. I almost bought it. But then I found the one I ended up purchasing. There is a very nice kid that is trying to sell it.He bought it almost a year ago and has never had it in the water. He has it marked down to $1600 right now, which I think is a good price for a boat that is in this good a shape. Plus it has the sliding galley feature with denatured alcohol stove and sink.
The thing that turned me on to the other boat is: the other boat came with a tandem axle trailer, and the seller had a video of the motor running that was less than a month old.
This young guy said the motor had ran in the past.....but hadnt ran it in quite awhile and couldnt get it started. We have probably all heard similar stories, but thats a heck of way to buy/risk when your not sure its gonna run.
Although, I gave a full thousand dollars more than the asking price on this boat.
