The latest issue of "Fair Winds", the Newsletter of the American Vega
Association went out on Friday. It's full of mistakes and generally
looks pretty amateurish because I rushed it at the last minute but
it's out any way; all twenty eight pages of it.
The following is an extract from the "Nav Station" column:
I could use some help with a few things. It would be very helpful,
for example, if someone could take over the memberships and mailing
list. I have run into a problem here with the state tax laws in
Hawaii. It seems that I am required to pay the 4% Hawaii State
General Excise Tax on the dues I collect. This entails taking out a
tax license and filing an additional tax return twice a year with the
state. My bank also wants me to open a business account to handle
the checks. (Some will say that you can get around this with a not-
for-profit corporation and this is correct, but forming a corporation
is more trouble than it is worth in this case given the amount of
money involved) I have done all this (Except for incorporating)but
it requires more time to keep the necessary records and, of course,
more expense in producing the newsletter which already costs more
than is covered by the dues. Considering all this, it makes more
sense to me for someone in another state with less draconian laws to
take over the handling of dues and membership records. If someone
who has access to the necessary computer tools could handle dues,
keep the membership list and produce mailing labels for me, they
could send me the mailing labels at appropriate intervals along with
a check to partially cover production and postage costs. This person
would bear the exalted title of "Membership Chairman"
Volunteers?
Burgees, T-Shirts etc.:
As of this writing, I am out of burgees and am looking for a source
but I still need camera ready artwork. Several of you have expressed
an interest in T-Shirts, caps, etc. The main hangup, again, is camera
ready artwork. If someone could provide that, I can do the rest.
On the Organization:
Between the newsletter subscribers and the Yahoo e-group participants
there are, perhaps, 200 to 250 Vega sailors participating in
information exchange in english, primarily in North America. I am
hoping that there are half a dozen or so among you who are willing to
form a committee to address the challenge of re-forming the
Association and capitalizing on the momentum begun by Brian Hofler
and the other twenty VEGAtarians of the Pacific North(South) West.
The Yahoo e-group has revolutionized communications among Vega
Sailors worldwide and has made information exchange easier and faster
than ever before(but only about half of the newsletter subscribers,
the AVA Members, have access to the e-group). It is time to
integrate this resource into the fabric of the Association and
consider the role of the Association and the newsletter and the free
exchange medium of the internet in continuing to keep Vega sailors in
touch around the world. If you are up for it you can contact me via
