Hi, I'm Hunter 23 owner and I'll like to know which is the motor (outboard) weight limit my boat can handle. I' ve got a 49 lbs. one (5 hp) and I'm wondering if I can use a 86 lbs. one (8 hp). Thank you and Regards G.B.

Others use 9.9 hp's.................

.....so I'd say that the extra weight of an 8 hp shouldn't make that much difference. To prove it to yourself, fill a 5 gallon gas tank and lash it to the transom just above your existing outboard. That should be close to the 86 lbs. of the new motor. Then compare how much that raises the bow while in the water.

Torque is more factor than weight!

William: I would be more concerned about the engine torque than the weight of the engine. I think that you will find that your 8HP engine is within the weight and torque parameters. You may want to contact Hunter and see what their specs are for your model.

It depends on the condition of the bracket

My 1988 Hunter 23 has an 8hp Nissan on the original fiberglass factory bracket which is in fairly good condition. However, I have seen brackets that wouldn't hold a 5 hp motor, so I keep a safety line tied to the motor just in case the bracket breaks. Brackets are going to break when you need them the most (motoring hard to get home in rough weather) so if you have any doubts about the condition of your bracket, replace it with immediately with a new metal bracket. I don't know what they cost in Spain but I've seen suitable brackets in catalogs here for about $140. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

h23 brackets,

For anyone who owns an h23 and has not looked inside real closely where out board mount bolts thru you may want to inspect it, in time the bolts loosen and they get retightened, in the process they tend over the years to dig into the fiberglass I reglassed mine and put a metal backing plate there ,additionally make sure that area is sealed really good because if not water gets between the motor mount and transom and can weep into the bolt holes, when I did mine I filled completely and redrilled, good luck Mike Bacome

do you need it?

I'm on an inland lake with no tides or currents so an 8hp motor has no advantage. The 5hp works fine for me. I only use it to get home if I can't sail or to enter marinas and it does that fine. Unless you are in tidal water why stress the bracket?
