I have had water slowly driping into my bilge for the last year. Today I pulled the last remaining throughhull, and that's not it! It is seeping through one of the drain holes on the starbord side amidships (between the inner and outer hull), then into the bilge - and I've now thoroughly checked EVERY thruhull. Has anyone ever had water seep in around the keel? Never heard of it, but don't know where else it's coming from. Anything to look for? Thanks

Drip from hell..........

Steve, on my 35.5 I had a drip that was entering the boat at the little curved piece of stainless that holds the wiring for the nav lites at the bow, then it migrated down BEHIND the foam-backed naugahyde, flowed all the way back to the aft end of the vee berth, down under the shelves of the port hanging locker, under the floor and behind the bulkhead that is the kickboard of the port setee! And thence, On to the bilge! Imagine the fun I had sleuthing that one out! Persevere, work it in reverse, do not give in. You are Man, you CAN do it. You will prevail! Press on, in the knowledge that others have gone before, and others will follow. It will be truly a day for rejoicing when you do find it! Keep us posted in your quest. Good Luck. My 33.5 did

My brandnew 33.5 had a leak from one of the keel bolts. The dealer drilled some holes into the keel around were the bolt was. He then filled it up with expoy. He said that this was the second boat they had seen with this problem.

Look in the archives

Dont know what yr your 34 is but the 83-87 models have leaks common to all of those yrs. alot of the leaks you wont see as they run thru the liner. The opening ports need rebedding, all of the fasteners on top should be bedded, rebed the stanchions, run a bead down the toerail, tighten the toe rail bolts and make sure it isnt your stuffing box. I used a hose to find some of mine. also the hatch area is a common stop for leaks. to cure this a dodger should be used and we have a 4x4 tarp that we cover the hatch when we are gone from the boat. Could also be a grab rail. Most freaquently the opening ports are a good spot to start. They are leakers and you cant see it . Craig

Here's what you do ......

First get a leaf blower....Then close all seacocks & things that should normally closed. Then, using a plastic bag replace one of your hatchboards with the plastic and seal the edges with duct tape. Seal around the companionway with duct tape. Cut a hole in the plastic and insert the output tube of the leaf blower through the plastic and seal that with duct tape. What you will be doing is 'inflating your boat'. Then put soapy water all over the top of the boat and fire up the leaf blower. Any deck leaks will appear by 'bubbling' up similar to the way a garage checks a tire for leaks.....Hopefully you'll find your leak pretty quickly....

Leaking 34

On my 34 the stuffing box drip found its way to the space between the hull and the liner forward of the bilge. I put a "catcher" under the drip and ran a hose directly to the bilge to keep the space between the hull and liner dry. Most of the water collected on the starboard side due to the natural heel to starboard.

Oddball Leak Sources

One unusual source you may want to inspect as a last resort is the safety valve discharge of you hotwater heater. Now, this assumes that the leak is a) fresh water, b) you have a hot water heater, and c) you have a relief valve. If none of the above apply .............. back to the drawing board. Ed - Leaking 34

Your response makes me want to go back and recheck the stuffing box. I should have mentioned that THIS leak is only when the boat's in water, so it's below the water line. Got to be either the keel - or now I'm really going to check the stuffing box. Thanks
