First roll of the dice here in Atlantic City:

I had the corner of a tooth break off about a month ago and have been worrying about it disintegrating further or decaying to the point that it turns into an emergency. I rented a car to do a major re-supply today and was checking out the other stores in the shopping center when I noticed that a sign on a dental clinic said, “No Appointments Necessary.”, unheard of.

Less than half an hour later, I was sitting in the chair with a very nice polish woman (here 20 years) looking at my tooth. There was decay under the gold inlay that the chunk came out next to so she said that it needs a crown. Ouch, that will cost about as much as my prop. I’m averaging about one $1000 surprise a week recently.

After giving her my solemn promise that I would have it looked at by my dentists when I get back to Portland in a couple months, she agreed to dig it out as best she could and put in a temporary plastic filling. About $380 later, I was out of there with a load off my mind about the size of the one off my wallet.

Dental emergencies can be worse than medical. You can always go to the emergency room for the latter but an infected tooth can bring a trip to an expensive halt just as quickly and even be life threatening. Anyone who has moved knows how hard it is to find a dentist you can see without buying a house, getting a job, filling out an application, and…. Oh, we’re not taking any new patients.

I expect the proximity of Atlantic City has something to do with the existence of this clinic. Imagine having a toothache to go with your gambling habit and a long anticipated vacation ruined.

Second Roll of the Dice:

I feel a bit better now about coming up here where it has been much more expensive to wait out the weather. I needed to be sure I was here to meet the two crew members that I’ve been emailing back and forth with for weeks about doing the leg to NYC with me. They both just bailed on me at the last minute. People ask why I singlehand. Well, if it resulted in my finding the dental clinic and avoiding waking up some morning with a toothache and needing to put the boat in a marina and fly back to Maine to eat painkillers for a few days until my dentist could fit me in, it was probably a good roll.

Anybody want to take a boat ride?

As long as you're breathing, life will keep coming at you :) And that's a good thing!
I've always figured that money is a second tier issue - no matter how much there is, it seems to never be enough, so why worry?

Hummm...

Roger,

Last year this time I was going south when I stopped at Atlantic City.

That is how I knew about the marina across the way. We stopped because we had to recover from squalls and thunderstorms. Spent the day sleeping it off.

It is a two day car trip for me to your location.

Let me see if any contacts I have in Barnegat Bay might be interested. Some live in NYC and sail the bay.

In the meantime, look at going inside up to Manasquan Inlet. At Atlantic City you are past the low draw bridges. The ones above you can handle your mast height. Just a PITA compared to outside.

Also, consider that Donald Launer lives on the upper reaches of the bay. He wrote: A Cruising Guide to New Jersey Waters. Maybe visit him? He is a member of the over the hill gang...

That leaves you about 30 miles outside to Sandy Hook.

I am sure others will reply...

Crew

Roger ... When are you leaving Atlantic City? Are you doing the East River to Long Island Sound? If so, then Connecticut coast or North Long Island? How "experienced" is the crew you're looking for? I may be able to join you for a few days IF I can get off work .... my email is my sbo user name at optonline dot net.

Kinda pricy for a temporary filling ! But, I guess, Atlantic City is kind of a pricy place.
Too bad it didn't break a couple of months ago when you were coming thru here... I would have been happy to "fix you up".
Unfortunately things have a habit of seldom timing out well.
Hope you get back to lobster pot country before anything else goes wrong..... seems the trip back North has been way more aggravating and expensive than the trip South.

well Roger, I hope I am completely wrong but all the signs you see as being lucky about that dental visit send up red flags to me. let me list them:
1. no appointment necessary
2. did not come recommended
3. $380 for a temporary

there are a couple things worse than a tooth that has chipped or might have some decay....... and that is decay that has been removed by someone who went a little too far and now the decay removal and replaced crown becomes a root canal and a crown.

I hope the $380 indicates a fantastic temporizing and no further problems....but that first sign "no appointment necessary" is a scary one to me. Good luck with everything dental and I hope you find the crew you are hoping for. :)

Roger, I think karma should kick in for a problem free trip the rest of the way home.

In the "good to know" column, I did read that the best place to have a heart attack (next to a hospital) is at a casino. The casino security staff is all trained on how to use a defibrillator and they get a lot of practice from the stress/alchohol/drugs/weight characteristics of many of the patrons. You hardly have time to hit the floor before they've got the defib pads on you.

When are you leaving Atlantic City?
Tomorrow, mid day. One of my potential crew did some juggling and came through. Only issue is that we have to go non-stop to Stamford, CT for him to meet other commitments.

Weather looks good for a close reach up the coast at this point. The wind vane works very well with the wind forward of the beam so we won't need to steer much but can sit in the companionway and watch the radar and traffic with a full scan every 5 - 10 minutes. That will greatly reduce the fatigue factor.

It would still be nice to have a third person. If you can drop everything and be in AC tomorrow, come along. No experience necessary aside from knowing how to call me if you see anything.

red flags to me.
Having had a lot of this work done, I think she did a good job. She didn't drill very much, just the minimum to get the decay.

The price was steep, yes, but the alternative would have been to store the boat and take a plane home. Price also included an X-ray.

Roger, I have made the run (in reverse) from Sandy Hook, NJ to Atlantic City in one day. We left early in the morning and arrived about 7:30pm in November 2004. There were 4 of us to rotate helm duty and motored all the way - wrong wind angle available to sail. We traveled 84.8NM in 11.97 Hrs. at 2700 RPM ( yes, I know, I'm anal enough to still have the trip log sheets). We Left Atlantic Highlands Marina and arrived at a (pooched) dock at Trump Marina.

Tides and currents

Roger,

Do a double check of tides and currents in East River a.k.a, Hells Gate.
You go nowhere against the current. Go like hell with the current.

Non stop puts you in the dark...

Current at the Verrazano shifts at 9:40am on Friday, so Sandy Hook shortly after sunrise would be just about perfect.

Atlantic City to Sandy Hook is about 75nm, at 5kts SOG that's 15 hours without any tacks.

Departing Atlantic City around, or shortly after lunch would give a healthy margin to arrive, should be able to make the whole trip under sail.

I guess I don't understand. You guys bitching about $380 for Roger's tooth (and health) and there is not much on a boat that doesn't cost $1,000!;)
