After many months of hassling around, I finally received the sample 35s5 interior door hinges I've been waiting for. For those who missed it, I found a custom hinge manufacturer who can make stainless steel replacement interior cabin door hinges for the unobtanium aluminum ones that came with the boat. I'd like to put together a volume order. I've installed the hinges on my boat and the fit & finish is fine. The door fits the frame normally and operates as it should. There's a rumor circulating that other models (45f5?) may use the same hinges and based on a photo I've seen, that seems to be true. I can't confirm this personally, so caveat emptor. If you can confirm this from first-hand knowledge, please share that info. A bit of hinge terminology - these hinges come in left-hand and right-hand flavors. A right-hand hinge is one that mounts on the right side of the door as seen when standing on the "inside" of the door (i.e. on the side of the door that you swing the door away from). As an example, the head door on the 35s5 is a right-hand hinge, the v-berth is a left-hand and the aft cabin is also a left-hand. The samples I received were all right-handed. What makes them so is the direction the hinge pin sticks out of one side of the hinge and the side of the screw holes that is chamfered. The pin in the hinge is captured by punching an indentation in the outside of the hinge (staking it). I put the hinge in a vice and gave the end of a pin a couple of whacks with a hammer, driving it through to the other side of the hinge and thereby converting it to a left-hand hinge. Worked fine, except I had to straighten the pin a bit as it had been tweaked by the staking process. So - here's what I'm thinking. Rather than buying both left and right-hand hinges, I'm thinking we just buy a bunch of lefties and then let the user reverse them as needed. Keeps the parts count down and eliminates ordering confusion. I've received a couple of emails in the past from interested parties, but it's been long enough now that I'd appreciate an email (rhunton at gmail dot com) if you're interested including quantities and I'll let you know about pricing as soon as everyone responds.
