The head problem (smells and backs up)

Our 1 year old boat has developed a bad odor coming from the outside vent when flushed; also fluid from the holding tank has started backing up in the toilet bowl about 30 min. after flushing dry (several cups). I have tried 2 head treatments (West Marine generic and something else called Odorless?), and finally used 1/4 cup of Clorox that I poured in the tank which stopped the odor, but will that do damage to any of the parts? Please help and give me a recommendation to treat odor, because we leave the boat for several weeks at the time unused. Do you think we need any valves or anything replaced? Thanks.

Clorox is a bad idea

It will corrode your aluminum holding tank and will also cause deterioration of rubber parts. Pump it out asap. From the water back up symptom you describe, you probably have a bad joker valve ( I asked about the same problem recently and will be rebuilding the head soon ). Check the archives for more details on odor problems.

Your holding tank can't be backing up unless...

...it's full to overflowing...there's no way the contents of the tank can "jump" up into the tank intake/head discharge line. However, it is possible for heeling to send tank contents back into the head discharge line, and if it's downhill from the tank to the head, whatever gets into that line can run back into the toilet. Incomplete flushing also leaves waste to build up in the line, so any flush water that remains in the hose to run back toward the toilet will be dirty. Backpressure from a clogged tank vent will prevent complete flushing...a clogged--or partially clogged vent will also cause odor. Pat is right...bleach is a non-no. It's corrosive and destructive to seals and valves in your toilet. Let's find the cause(s) for your problems and correct them instead of throwing counterproductive "bandaids" at it. Is this a new problem--especially the odor out the vent? Or have you had odor out the vent since you bought the boat? Before you answer that, I suggest you read the articles--especially the one on odor control in holding tanks--in the Head Mistress forum Reference Library...they'll give you a better understanding of what's going on and what to look for on your boat. Then I can help you figure out what you need to do to correct it. Before

Dead stuff in the water.

I had the same smelly head problem. I installed a head pump kit and noticed the valves had a lot of calcium buildup. This stopped the backup problem. I then started flushing with fresh water from the sink. I realized that leaving marina or other outside water in the bowl for more than a few days causes the stink. Any living thing, the sea is full of tiny things, will die and decay and you have swamp water left. Since using fresh water, my boat stays fresh smelling. Just keep the water tank topped off. LInda, there's a simple cure for intake odor...

Check out the article in the HM forum Reference Library called "Intake Odor Cure." It describes just a simple inexpensive modification to your head sink and intake plumbing that lets you rinse all the seawater out of the system with freshwater.
