Picked up our "new" boat today, a 75 Oday 22. There is a hole in the hull and deck at the rub rail, the mast is bent, one broken gudgen, and a cracked hatch...to name a few of my challenges, but otherwise, aint she a huney!! D

the hole and the mast

I've attached a picture of the hole. I already have some ideas on how to patch. I'm wondering about the mast. Does anyone know where I might find a good used mast? It is 22'6"

Huney!

Hey Don: CONGRATULATIONS! There's a bunch of work there awaiting you, but the fun is in the effort. The mast can be used as a template for a new one. Try the website for O'day parts on the header page of the O'Day site. There's a place in MA that sells O'day parts online (Rudy - from D & R I think). He might have a replacement mast in stock. This might do: http://shop.odayowners.com/masts/detail-mast.tpl?&fno=60&cart=3293071715144008&group=307 Depending on the rigging you have, you might be able to reuse it, but talk that over with the folks who'll sell you the mast. Other than that, the boat is a gem in the rough. A little compounding solution to that hull and she'll be shiny red again. Keep us posted! And thanks for the photo. you can get a mast from Dwyer Mast Co. but they are pricy. I think I was given a quote of $400 for the spar or $800 fully rigged (You can rig the mast your self so DO NOT pay for the drilling of 5-6 holes and spreaders) You'll also pay for shipping one big long piece of aluminum (about $100 unless you get it yourself) Rudy got my mast for me at a considerable discount (I paid $400 shipped to my boat club) He knows EXACTLY what to send. BEST OF LUCK !!!

Holes

Hi Don: I saw your second photo of this posting of hte port gunwhale up forward. It certainly looks as if the hull-deck joint is damaged and in need or re-building. How far does that vertical crack in the hull go down? I'd pay close attention to that! It looks like a large enough repair to warrant having it looked at by a professional fiberglass repair shop or boat yard at least to get an idea of what it will cost. They will probably cut out what's damaged back to the original hull, and start from there with a hull and deck patch. The hull may have to be repainted as well. If the same unfortunate occurance where to befall me, I'd look into getting the work repaired professionally by a yard somewhere. Fortunatley it occurs in a spot on the hull where the stresses from the shrouds are minimal. The mast postings cauhgt me as far as how cheap the raw extrusion is ($400). The link I posted before for a new mast was off this site and (I presume) was from D & R. They quoted a 25 foot mast (fully rigged with spreaders, mast head fitting, bottom plate, and cleats for around $1200 I think. Up for a challenge and have loads of free time? Get the Dwyer mast section and shop around for the parts and custom-design your mast! Let us know how your work goes. Good Luck! Regards, Stu Timm "Karakahl" 1979 O'day 22 CB Centerport
