The furling jib

I've never run a furling equipped jib before, and had two questions: can it be used to decrease jib surface area (easy reefing) in higher wind conditions? And, is there any reason to rig the jib as shown in the manual: with the standing end of the jibsheet tied to the block, passed through the grommet in the clew of the sail and routed back through the jib block (as opposed to simply tying the jibsheet to the clew directly?

Erik,

On our Hunter 33.5, I tie both Jib Sheets to the clew with bowlines and run the sheets back to the turning block and then up to the jib wenches. I wouldn't want to run the sheet freely thru the clew cringle since it would add friction and chafing.

Thats what I've done in the past, so I was unsure if there was an advantage to the pictured method in my 216 manual. Thanks!

Yes, the jib can be rolled in to set your sail for windier conditions. I know people that use one long sheet instead of two. They tie a knot in the middle, through the clew. I don't know the type knot they use, but it works for them.

I have attached a double/parallel block on the clew and run the jib sheets through there just to reduce friction and wear on the lines. Don't know that I have encountered enough wind where the mechanical advantage of running the lines as designed actually makes a difference.

Ken,
You can still use a bowline even though it is tied in the middle of the sheet. The rabbit that comes up the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole :) is just longer the usual.

I usually just put a bight in the middle of the sheet, pass it through the clew ring, and then run both ends through the bight. Quick, simple, and it holds.

Erik,
Every time the wind overpowers my rig, I reduce sail first by rolling a percent of my jib back up. Much simpler and safer than putting a reef in the main under those conditions.
