The Canvas Store is getting desperate !!!

I opened my mail yesterday and had a flyer from The Canvas Store in NY. This is the same place, discussed here at length, that will NOT stand behind their product even when ordered to do so by a Judge. It seems the posts, here on Sailboatowners.com / Catalinaowners.com, must have chewed into their business so they are using the mailing list from Catalina's Mainesheet Magazine and sent out sale flyers for winter covers. I'm half tempted to print off the thread "Buyer Beware Part 2" from this web site and return it to them, with their flyer, letting them know why I will NEVER buy from them? What do you guys think should I do? Should I do it just to let them know the power of the web? Perhaps every Catalina owner who gets one of these flyers should do this. If Mr. McGovern had listened to the Judge, or better yet, stood behind their warranty as stated they would not have to be begging for business like they are now. Oh and get this right in the flyer it states "Cover guaranteed for life of boat ownership" ya right!!!!! Below is the link to the original post about the Canvas Store.. http://archives.sailboatowners.com/pviewarch.htm?fno=20&sku=2006258082859.21&id=425403&ptl=#2006276084129.79

Let it die

You've beat the subject to death here for two months or more. Unless you want it to become your life's work, let it go. I got the flyer too. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Update

Since this has been brought up again, I figured I'd post the latest... TCS has not paid me yet. The Sheriff's dept has received the paperwork to serve the collection, and should be doing so within the next 30 days or so (apparently there's quite a backlog of deadbeats in Long Island who refuse to pay judgments against them!). Stay tuned! Tim

It makes no sense that he wouldn't settle, but in any case they have made quite a few good covers. Maybe we shouldn't be boycotting him - I get the impression there are a lot more happy buyers than unhappy. Not that i condone what DID happen in any way. You definitly deserve a refund - that cover fits terribly.

I also go the flyer

I got it in the mail a few weeks ago and thought it was funny especially after reading the thread here. I too thought of sending a link although I'm sure they follow this website. I live on L.I. near them. My impression of them has always been they were over priced. Now I have added sleazy deadbeats who don't stand behind their work to the list. I say keep the thread alive, send them links, boycott their business, etc. Send a strong message to them and their kind.

I think companies

that don't stand by their products, or stiff the customer, should be taken to task. I think these kinds of companies depend on wearing people down until they just give up and say "what the hell...., I quit." I give Tim a lot of credit for pursuing this issue and keeping us all up to date on it. I hope he never gives up until the Canvas Store makes good on what they owe him. Hopefully that will be soon. In the interim, Tim has my support.

flyer

I heard that the flyer was sent out because the ad they had paid for in mainsheet had not been included in the last issue. It could be as simple as that. I do not know anything except what I have read in this post regarding the issue of their fair business practices.

MY TWO CENTS

I also have read the post from several months back. I don't care if they made 10,000 nice canvas products in the past. The idea here is to spread the word to everyone that cares. I have had similar problems in the past with other "service" related comanies...its a nightmare that should at all times be avoided. I feel sorry for the poor fellow that is having the problem, been there done that. Now we as thinking consumers should do all within our power to avoid such a company. Get it somewhere else, anywhere else would be better than taking a chance on recieving such unethical service. As far as sending thread to co. regarding this issue...THEY DON"T CARE!!!!! If they did they would have printed their side of the story here! I'm positive that they are aware by now. I normally don't print or post much on this site...but I visit it every day to learn all that is available from knowledgable sailors...thanks

start the collection process asap...

whenever you gain a judgment in small claims, start the process to collect right away. In our state the grace period is 30 days before collection can be enforced by local authorities. You can instruct them to garnish bank accounts or go directly to the cash register .... what ever it takes. I once took Home Federal Savings to small claims court. They cashed a paycheck that had been stolen from an ATM deposit bag with another bank. They really put me through the ringer, even suggesting I was the crook... But I persisted, and prevailed. After being awarded the judgement they made no attempt to pay until I made a phone call on the thirtieth day and explained that if I wasn't payed immediately I would bring the marshall down to their bank while they were open and have them take the money right out of the till. My check arrived the next day. It's unfortunate but your case is not uncommon and you shouldn't feel personally offended. Don't waste any energy on a vendetta, just get your money back and move on. The offender will get what's coming to them.

NYSail, You are correct, there ARE deadbeats in Detroit too. There's even a whacko who decided to go on a random shooting spree the other day. What a world we live in, huh? In any event, I did not mean to generalize about Long Islanders with my comment about deadbeats there, and I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone. Cheers, Tim ...removing the foot from my mouth now.

You are right when you say that it's been "beat". But not to death. The man did something terrible and is fleecing honest people. Should we let him get away with it? I say no way. The canvas Store took this mans money and promised him something in return for it. He never got what the store promised. He brought them to court and won a judgement. Now it's up to the folks to do what is right. And that is talk about it. Show the world just exactly what this stores business practices are like. Dishonest. And dishonesty must be brought to the forefront so that all know who they are dealing with. Saving people from unfair business practices is an unfortunate necessity. But feedback is important. Without it we all suffer. Tim did us a great service in coming out and informing us about this store. He didn't have to. He saved someone not only heart ake, but money too! Being a consumer of products, I say thank you Tim, and hopefully more will speak out when screwed by businesses. We need more people willing to stand up, like Tim ,not tuck our heads in our collars and walk away and tell nobody. What the hell is that about. Stand up and act like a man, not a mouse. Keep it up, Ctskip

I'm with Ctskip and .....

I'll repeat what I said before in the other posts from a couple months back TCS still has Tim's money and the defective boat cover! now its been a long time since they lost in court so they should pony up the dough! If they paid the jugdement and people were still bad mouthing then thats not cool but they have taken the steps to make it harder for Tim to get his money and were not talking a few hundred but a few thousand dollars that I'm sure Tim could use. and you can be sure that they are reading this so why don't they do the right thing and end this.
