I am starting a search for a fast, older cruiser/racer to spend my summers on. With a purchase budget of $25000 to $65000, what is the best made, fastest sailboat? I have been looking at C&C 38 and 40, Cal 39, Pearson 37 and 40, Erikson 38, and others. I am willing to include boats from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. I also like the idea of pilot berths, decent head, nav station, and galley. I need informed opinions to help my search. Please respond to mayberryfinearts@worldnet.att.net

Tartan?
From my study of boats in Lake Erie marinas, and having sailed on Tartans, they seem to be a good compromise of speed, comfort, and affordability. You can see from the "Related Link" below that "affordability" tops out at about 37 feet.
The 'J' boats are a little too spartan for my tastes and usually not afforable.

Richard; Asking which is the best older boat is a little like asking which is the best older woman. Everything is subjective. You have to look at, and sail on if possible, as many boats as you can. Cruising World mag has a column called Plastic Classics, I think it is. They may have an archive on their site. Good luck.

Include the H37.5 in your search
The 37.5 is the smaller version of the 40.5 and I love our 40.5 in all categories. I have heard only praise from the 37.5 owners.
