i would like to make (or have the first mate make!) a headsail bag for our 23.5 from the sailrite catalog. their bags run in size that max out at 100 and 200 sq. ft. for working headsails. i see from the specs that a 23.5 carries 254 sq. ft. of sail in total, but does anyone know how the size of the genoa? and to be more direct, can anyone make a recommendation on which size sailrite bag would be best? thanks again to the forum, ed

Sail Plan Diagram

Looking at the sail plan from Hunter, the spec says sail area is 236 sq. ft. In the picture it looks as though the main and jib split the area fairly even.

You could measure the sail

ED: Measuring the sail will give you the best estimate. You can get a fifty foot tape measure for very little money and use the 1/2 x base x height formula for the area of a triangle. I found my sail was not cut to come all the way up to the mast block so my measurements are not as big as what the specs say. I suspect many sails are sold like this. I like mine that way because I can add a pennant at the bottom and see under the sail better. Gotha is a small town. I wonder if you know my brother on spence court? Frank

sail bags

Genarally, when you get a sailbag, the larger the better. The reason is so that you do not try to bunch a sail into a small bag and then it is more difficult to get out and over the years, the creases will wear out the sail faster. I tell folks who fold there sails all the time, do not refold in the same place as the creases will eventually wear out the sail. As for sail bags, if there is a sailboat dealer near you, most of the time they have extras and some would give them away just to get rid of it. That may be one route/ Crazy Dave Condon
