The anger of Neptune

I believe I have angered the great God of the Seas by not naming my boat yet. It is a 1983 MacGregor 25 and the previous owners did not name her (I don't think). It seems everytime I go out for a sail the winds die and the water becomes still.

Does anyone know of a ceremony for naming a boat and if necessary de-naming it first (just in case)?

You must make a sacrifice....

I was instructed by one of the major contributors on this board that you must make a sacrifice. A bottle of Rum must be given to the Gods. He also informed me it is permissible to filter it through a kidney first....

I must have made them mad too......

The same thing happens to us, but it's not because we haven't name our boat. When we bought the boat last November it came with a name I didn't care for, "Temptation". We've started calling it "Liberty", but haven't officially changed the name yet. Seems the last 4 or 5 times we've gone out, it's been great for about 1/2 hour then the wind drops to nothing. We end up motoring most of the way back and I HATE motoring! I have the new letters. Do you think it will help to just put the tube of new letters in the cabin until I get around to repainting and applying them??

Seriously-

if you type in "boat naming ceremony" under the search, you'll see there was discussion about just this 3 or 4 days ago. Wish I could remeber what it said!!!!

Thanks to all

I especially like the sacrificing of a bottle of rum :D. I shall do all of the mentioned ceremonies.

Boones Farm might also work, if you can't afford Rum. LOL

We renamed

our boat. We changed it from Pegasus to Nauticat I did not want to take any chances being new sailors. We googled naming a boat and found the denamining and naming ceremonies. I followed them even though my wife thought I was nuts.:laugh:I would go through with it you never know.

Google "vigors renaming ceremony". This is the only method I am aware of that will work. Others come close but don't tempt fate with them:naughty::). Read it carefully and follow it to the letter.

And above all, do not use Boone's Farm. If you cannot afford some good champagne, you cannot afford a boat!

Brian, just suggesting such blasphemy is enough to shower Neptune's wrath down upon you.

Phil, we need some blue happy and angry smilies holding tritons.

Denaming ceremony

I have searched high and low and I cannot find any reference that would indicate that my boat had ever been named. Therefore, is the denaming ceremony even necessary?

Absolutely. You must complete the whole process from start to end loudly while in a crowded anchorage. Invite guests. Strangers count for more brownie points with Neptune.

Someone called the boat by a name at some time. Use "the boat" for the old name when performing the ceremony....and don't forget the pentagrams on the foredeck! oops, forget that last part. Different ceremony.
