I had no intention of visiting Hilton Head, it being very much the antithesis of the kind of places I enjoy on the waterway. However, a friend ignored my specific instructions to donate to charity this year instead of sending me a Christmas present. I’m pretty much taking a holiday from the holiday this year and have not even arranged for mail delivery until next year. She sent an email saying that a package would be at a marina way up Broad Creek. I didn’t want to trouble them with having to send it back so I had to backtrack up there.
I called the marina on Saturday after anchoring and the package had not arrived. Next possible deliver Monday so there I was, up the creek with nothing to do except wait and look at huge condos. After that, everything went surprisingly nicely.
Forumite “Woodster” sent a PM saying he was in the area doing some work and invited me to lunch. I decided to go into the marina for fuel, and ice which would let me tie up the boat there long enough for lunch. The marina called just as I was getting ready to raise the anchor and said that the package had arrived and they just found it. So, despite my best efforts, I'll have one present to open Christmas morning. Thanks, Susie.
Woodster was headed back to Georgia and I was now anxious to get on down to Daufuskie Island so we changed lunch to a pleasant brunch followed by a quick run through the last good food store I’ll see until Florida and West Marine. It’s always nice to meet readers.
I was thinking as I returned to the boat that being on Hilton Head was sort of like being at Disney World. Sure enough, when I looked at the chart, the marina was labeled, "Disney Marina". I was soon leaving all that behind me and headed down the river with a good current behind me.
As I approached the Cooper River, I saw a powerboat far ahead which I could just barely see was towing a dinghy. Only people from Maine tow their dinghies so I knew it was my friends from Georgetown, the ones whose dinghy I rescued a couple years before in Maine. They were conserving fuel so I eventually caught up with them received an invitation to dinner.
I checked out the public dock at Daufuskie and it is a boat killer. There are three pile dolphins on the outside of each end. One slip of a spring line or other minor hitch in the two plus knot current and my wind vane gear and dinghy would be history. No plans to visit this island until I find an alternative. The river is too deep and fast to anchor anywhere nearby.
Today’s predicted isolated thunderstorms looked as though they would almost miss us to the north so we figured getting as far south as possible tipped the odds in our favor. We ran down to the Herb River just past Thunderbolt where we encountered the boat which had been anchored with us in Georgetown. This led to a very nice three boat dinner and my second free meal of the day.
It’s hard to tell from the radar what the storms will do today. It looks like the serious stuff will pass to the north but there might be some pop up boomers. I’ve now reached the very nice part of the ICW where you are seldom more than a couple miles from possible anchorage so I’ll just keep an eye on the Doppler radar and putter along.
