Testing holding tank

Other than the obvious, that is, seeing the leaking fluid in the tank area of the aft compartment, has anyone devised a simple pressure test to check for leaks? I have a 28.5 with the fiberglass built in tank. There is some very dry residual matter in the area of the fittings, but it doesn't seem active. It is definitely the right color if the tank or a fitting had leaked. Perhaps its an old leak which was fixed. What do think about slightly pressurizing the tank and looking for the leaks this way? Has anybody tried anything like adding some food coloring? Thanks for any tips or ideas.

You're on the right track

Pump out and THROROUGHLY rinse out the tank tank. Fill completely with clean water to which you've added food coloring. Block the tank vent...flush the toilet in the dry mode till you start to feel some real backpressure, but don't overdo it. Then inspect around fittings etc for signs of the food coloring. Depending on how long it's been since the joker valve in your toilet was replaced (if ever), the tank may not hold pressure very well...the pressure will escape right back up the through head discharge. So if it's been more than a year since you've replaced it, this exercise will be a lot more productive if you replace it first. It should be replaced at least every two years anyway.

replacement

Thinking ahead, do you know if anyone has ever replaced the fibrglass, with a real tank ie plastic? The thought of patching a fibreglass tank from the inside, is not a pleasant one.
