I need to get my trailer inspected and they test the brakes on a roller
How can I test them myself before going there?
The brake fluid level tends to fall to zero from season to season
How can I be sure I dont have a leak?
Thanks

If you are losing fluid, you have a leak. Look for fluid or rust behind the dust seals on the wheel cylinders. Assuming you have surge brakes, try backing up without using the lockout lever.

I dont see any fluid leaking
How do I use the lockout lever?
perhaps I should try toget an owners manual

Should be some sort of mechanism to lock out the trailer brakes, otherwise when you back up they will apply. Have you pulled the drums to look at the cylinders?

If you have "freebacking" drums, they won't engage when you back up and there is no lever to lock them out. This might be stupid, but if all else fails, chock the trailer and back up slightly to compress the actualtor. Secure it with ratchet strap or stout rope. Now drive forward. If they pull, they're working. There might be an easier way but this should work.

i've heard of surge brakes being tested by driving forward (on gravel) and then lock up the brakes. you need an observer to watch the trailer wheels to see if they skid. this might not work without the weight of the boat on the trailer.
