I Have a '87 23' Wing keel and I am wondering what the tension on the stnding rigging is suppose to be. Thanks Jason

Jason, The keel should not have any bearing

on your standing rigging. The tensions on the shrouds and stays is governed by the wire size. Usually in the area of 10 to 20 percent of its breaking strength. Hunter Marine should be able to give you the spec's and with a Loos gauge ($50) you can set your boat up. She will sail much better after adjustment. If the rigging is presently loose or you if you can't recall the last time this was done then you are a candidate for this procedure. Ray S/V Speedy

H23 shrouds

There have been quite a few discussions on this subject in the past. May I suggest that you look through the archives? The link below points to quite a lively discussion on this very subject; I myself found this one to be very helpful when tuning the rigging on my own '23'. Have fun! Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass Ett

Hi Jason

The wing-keel H23 had at least two different masts, Kenyon (constant section) and Z-Spar (tapered above the forestay). The recommendations for mast rake, bend and shroud tension will get you into the ballpark. After that you have to tweak your rig to get the best results. A Loos gauge will definitely help. I'd also suggest that you set up your backstay so you can adjust the tension while under way. This is a VERY useful adjustment and it's not hard to do. E-mail me at oneprof@earthlink.net for the procedure and more rig tuning tips if you're interested. Peter H23 "Raven"
