Tension on Fore stay, Side stays also Mast Rake Hunter 140

Hunter 140 Scappoose, Or
I'd been wondering what the ominous sound was when sailing my Hunter 140 until my wife got her fingers pinched by a large crack between the deck and hull when under sail. After turning the hull over for repair I realized the crack to be 9 feet long. I repaired it with Plexus and fiberglass and added a pair of chain plates to each side with the hope that the problem will not reoccur.

When stepping the mast I reasoned that the side stays and fore stay might need to be readjusted in apparent length to compensate for the now repaired 1/4 inch crack, but I am clueless on how much tension there should be. Do I want enough tension for a guitar string "twang" or should they be loose enough so that the leeward stay goes visibly slack under sail?

Finally, how much rake (tilt toward the stern) should there be to the mast?

Many thanks for any advice,

Columbia River Doug

Take a couple of photos and post them here. Then a phone call. I was a dealer and very much involved with the ACP construction made boats plus I introduced it. Send me a private message via forum.

Hunter 140 trailer
I'm finding myself looking for answers to the same questions for an old and worn Hunter 140 I'm hoping to sail for a couple of years. I thought I had some photos, but I'm not finding them now. There are some serious cracks that I'm going to patch, and I'm going to reinforce the cockpit with some thin plywood and resin. But overall, she seems sound for the most part. I've been wondering about the standing rigging and whether the previous adjustments were right. Seems like other boats with a 3 stay mast call for 180 to 200 lbs depending on wind, which sounds about right. I'm wondering about the rake and if that tension is right. I stepped the mast and hoisted the sails to get a look at them and it did seem a bit sloppy. I've looked at the Hunter 140 owners manual and the model brochure, but I can't seem to find anything on the standing rigging. I'll have to post some photos of my rehab work when I'm done and she's out on the water.
