I'd been wondering what the ominous sound was when sailing my Hunter 140 until my wife got her fingers pinched by a large crack between the deck and hull when under sail. After turning the hull over for repair I realized the crack to be 9 feet long. I repaired it with Plexus and fiberglass and added a pair of chain plates to each side with the hope that the problem will not reoccur.
When stepping the mast I reasoned that the side stays and fore stay might need to be readjusted in apparent length to compensate for the now repaired 1/4 inch crack, but I am clueless on how much tension there should be. Do I want enough tension for a guitar string "twang" or should they be loose enough so that the leeward stay goes visibly slack under sail?
Finally, how much rake (tilt toward the stern) should there be to the mast?
Many thanks for any advice,
Columbia River Doug
