Hello Tempest owners, Justin thanks for the welcome and your willingness to help. Fellow tempest owners. I'm trying to determine if I have a tempest or not. The boat has a well for the outboard, a steel keel (no centerboard to raise or lower) the mast is attached to the top of the cabin. There is no support beam beneath it. There was a head immediately on the starboard side inside the cabin.(this has been junked because of illegal set-up and corosion) On the port side there is a seacock that was located in a storage box. I'm assuming from looking at pictures of other oday 23 boats that this might have been for a sink. I would love to see pictures of other tempests and how they have been customized or refinished stock. Has anyone put in a head with a storage tank? If so where? Under the cockpit? I'm thinking about just using a porta-potty for this season. Also, with a well, did you find that you needed an outboard with an extra long leg? Any help is greatly appreciated. This is my first boat and I can't wait to sail her. I say her because she is going to be called "Sneakin' Sally" Thanks everyone

A novis responds to questions.

Hello Kevin I also recently bought a 23 Oday Tempest. The well at the aft does allow for a small outboard motor. I have a six horsepower Evinrude, with a short shaft. It works great with a little muscle power to install or remove on each trip because its not a good idea to keep engine in the water. Jay

It sure sounds like a duck

Kevin: the boat you describe sure sounds like a Tempest. A starboard side head that vents directly overboard and a port side sink was how all the Tempests I have seen were set up. The mast also steps on the cabin top, and there is an outboard well. I would echo Jay's advice that you do not keep your outboard in the water. Funky stuff tends to grow on it, and if you don't hang a zinc or two with it, it will also corrode.

thank you guys

Thanks for the valuable advice. I definitely appreciate it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the outboard. I was thinking about putting on a coat of bottom paint and zinc tabs. have fun sailing guys

tempest oday

I've got a 1965 tempest oday 23. Head on the starboard, self contained sink on the port. No engine well however, we have a bracket on the stern. We started out trying a regular shaft outboard, but it really didn't work well, we now have a Johnson sail master with the extra long shaft. If you'd like a picture, E-mail me your address.
