temp. rain/sun shade for sides/rear of bimini?

Has anyone rigged up some sort of temporary rain or sun shade for the sides or rear of a bimini? My boat has a dodger, bimini and the connector piece between the two. Looking for something I can rig up at anchor/dock for when the rain is blowing from the side/rear (or if the sun is low) at anchor/dock.

Any thoughts on a cheap remedy other than a tarp with bungee cords :D?

Cheers,
iSailor.

A cheap remedy other then tarp and bungee cords? Short answer is no. But I have seen side panels made and attached to bimini’s with grommets. Down south I’ve seen them made from a mesh sunscreen material that blocks the sun’s rays and can be used to keep rain out. I’m sure any canvas guy can have them made up for you. Cheap? Thats another issue……..

I don't have any pictures and the bimini is not on the boat right this moment but my bimini has zippers around the perimeter of it and I have white (to keep cool) sunbrella shades that attach. They go from the bimini to the to of the rail and lifelines. They attach to the rail and lifelines to keep them from blowing in. While I wouldn't sail with them, they work very well at anchor or in a slip. I had the zippers on the bimini replaced (maintenance) last month for relatively little money ($200 for all the zippers and some work on my dodger). So with a little work and some minimal expense you could probably get something like that. If I can get the canvas on this week, I'll take a pic.

Shadecloth

I have several 6x6 pieces of shade cloth on my boat. Its a tan mesh screen that lets in about 65% of the sunlight. The breeze moves through it fine and it will keep a light rain mostly out of the cockpit.
A couple years ago I made a hard bimini top, added sailrite curtain track and put the shadecloth up when desired. It can be purchsed with binding and grommets, easy enough to put anywhere with plastic (no rust) squeeze clamps or bungees. One piece is usually used as a fly between the dodger and bimini in really hot weather.

I've used small clamps like a woodworker might use to attach sunshades to the Bimini. Can work with pieces of canvas and put the bottom over the lifelines or a grommet in the corners to be able to tie the bottom down.
