Need some help on a temp gage on a 1981 Catalina 27 with a 5411 universal desel. The temp gage shows very little if any movement after thirty min. of operation. I run the new to me boat for about five min.without opening the water intake, and at that time the gage went to 150 degres then I open it and it went to the low mark and did not come back up. I have since changed the impeller and the water does ciculate out thru the exhaust but no move ment on the gage. I have grounded the wire to the sending unit and it moves the gage. I think it is the sending unit but any and all opinions will be appreciated. Thanks "MIC"

5411 cooling system

If your 5411 is raw water cooled it should run at 135-145 degrees, no hotter. That is to prevent salt deposits attaching to the cooling system. You didn't mention actual temps, but you might borrow a handheld gauge to see what the actual temp is. You can change the sending unit with one from an auto parts store. We did just that on our 5411 powered Cat 30.

Thanks Jack for your response. I pulled the sending unit out of the block and heated it with a Fire starter wand.It did register but not very high so it may be the sending unit. Went to the engine parts store and they needed to know the mfg. of the gage. The only thing on the gage is a small circle with a D in the middle. Does anyone have a clue as to the mfg. Thanks "MIC"

It may be ok

I am in no way a diesel expert. My 5411 takes quite a long time to heat up according to the gauge. After several minutes it doesn't move at all, then after 10 to 15 min it gets to 135 degrees. Then it shoots up to 150 and stays there. If you shut off the water and it went up quickly wouldn't that imply that it is functional? (Isn't that hard on the impellor?) I keep an eye on the temperature by feeling the water pump housing. It should be warm to the touch but not hot or cold. Try looking up Torresen Marine on the net. They will probably know. That's my 2 cents worth. 30 minutes is a very long time with no movement. Maybe it is hooped. Maybe not. Keep us informed! -Rob
