I have a 1990 Honda 4 stroke 8 HP outboard and I want to add a Teleflex motor control (gear/throttle) to it. Honda tells me I need a special kit to connect my two 3300 cables to the motor. Teleflex tells me I DON"T need any kit. Anyone out there that has connected a Teleflex to a Honda, could you let me know what you did? Thanks, Bob

2 different things, I think...

I suspect Honda is saying you will need the Honda parts kit in order to connect remote control (throttle/shift) to your outboard. You will need one unless you previously had these controls on this motor. Teleflex is probably talking about their special connection kit for their controls that some makes of motors require. (I don't think Honda requires them.) Apparently there is a Teleflex adaptor required to attach the basic cable to the other brands of motors. This connector is different than that actual Honda connector kit for the motor. In other words, they are 2 different things: you need the Honda, you don't need the Tohatsu. My dad and I just did this to a Tohatsu on a H260 and we needed the Tohatsu parts kit, but not a special connector for the Teleflex cables.

What we did!

We connected a remote throttle and gear change to a 10 h.p. Honda. We used the genuine Honda parts. The kit for the motor end which was fitted by an authorised dealer was fairly extensive. Better him doing it than me. A tip if you're fitting this apparatus, make sure that your control cables are longer and not shorter. If the cables are too short, this makes the lever operation quite hard to get into reverse, but this piece of equipment certainly makes getting in and out of marina berths far easier as you don't have to look away to do something on the motor. We fitted this to our boat, a Ross 780 Mark III, N.Z. design, veeerrry fast!!! Cheers Bing
