Peggy: While installing a new head on the boat, I replaced the discharge hose. After connecting the new hose to the Y valve, I noticed a leak at the connection, even with the two clamps as tight as I could get them. While both the old and new hoses were 1 1/2" ID, the new hose was not as snug as the original hose. This seems to be the opposite problem that most people have. To stop the leak, I used plumbing teflon tape on the fitting and then got the new hose back on the fitting. Everything seems to be fine at this time, but wanted to check to see if this will create a long term issue.

Teflon tape is fine...

In fact, it's recommended on all threaded connections--the ONLY sealant that is. It's rare that it would needed on a hose barb, but it's ok to use it there too. But I have to ask: why is there a y-valve in the system on a boat on an inland "no discharge" lake? Texas law requires that holding tanks cannot be capable of being emptied by any means except pump out.

Y Valve

The boat was delivered with the Y valve. I plan to move the boat to the coast and elected to leave the valve intact. I have a semi-permanent (disabled lock) device that limites the valve in holding tank only mode. Getting the disabled lock off the valve will require a saw. The potty police here have an on-again/off enforcement policy, so I will pray for their good blessing if the valve is checked. Thanks for the OK on the teflon tape. I must admit that I was a bit surprised at the less than tight fit on the valve stem.
