Paul, based on your comment I have to guess that your wife doesn't help out on board. Your comment is no big deal to me as mine does. She always handles the lines at the slip or fuel docks. She's at the helm when we anchor. I hate to admit it but she's pretty damned good behind the wheel, with a fine touch for keeping us on the wind. I'm comfortable taking an extended nap while she drives, knowing she'll wake me if she has a question. The only thing she doesn't do is to navigate (she's learning) or set and trim the sails. The latter being a little too strenous for her. Guess I have it lucky as I don't know anyone else who's wife helps out like mine does. Or perhaps it's that none of the guys I know will trust their wives. BTW it's a great source of pride for her to be able to do so much work on board. Let me add it's a source of pride for me as well.

let's not start a pissing match .
My wife always takes the helm when we leave the slip and casts off the stern lines, I cast off forward. She takes the helm for anchoring and weighing anchor and takes the forward lines when we back into our slip. She takes the bow line when we go to the pump out dock. I don't feel any need to check on her because she knows what she is doing.

Ross I'm not trying to start a pissing match, it's not my style. Merely stating that we see very few women doing anything more than going for a ride.

Mike, I guess that up here in the low rent district we have more women that are doers. We have several women who own and sail their boats and bring men along if they are useful. We also have a few that just plain don't enjoy anything about the boat and would rather be someplace else.
Mike, I thought Paul took offence rather too quickly.

Ross, in over 15 years of sailing I can count on one hand the number of women that are active members when it comes to running their boat. Those that do are more than capable and enjoy doing so. My wife happens to be one of those who enjoy it. We have plans on doing some extened cruising up and down the east coast within the next few years. She's doing everything she can to educate and prepare herself for that time.

As for Paul, I was perplexed at his response. His post left it fairly open to interpretation, for which I made some assumptions. I'm not sure what offened him as he did not explain. No harm, no foul meant on my part.

I was Surprised

I was really surprised at how many women really do a lot on boats,I see a lot
husband and wife teams on boats.
I also see quit a few good looking women sailing with out a man and also see the woman on boats that do nothing but the sunning thing.
I am one of the lucky ones that she will get mad if I don't let her help out with all the aspects of sailing,she wants to know how to sail on her own so when she knocks me over board she can still get the boat home.

Seadaddler, I think our wives may have the same idea in mind One nice thing about having the wife interested in the boat is she never complains about how much money I spend on it.

Mine's the best First Mate that I have. If when we dock, there is a problem with getting the lines, it sure isn't her fault that they are out of reach since she isn't the one at the helm.
