I've noticed that the thin pierce of exterior teak trim just below the hand rails (see photo) is very hard to keep looking decent. Has anyone ever replaced this thing with something else...plastic or stainless?
Also, when refinishing this...do most of you guys do it in place, or unscrew it and do it in the shop?
As always, your opinions are much appriciated.

Eyebrows

I have removed the "eyebrows" to refinish them. I also agree that they are a pain to do. Hope someone weighs in w/ a good fix, whether stainless or something else. If I ever do get a next boat, one of the deal breakers will be whether or not it has teak exposed to weather. I began by thinking teak looked traditional, nautical, and all that. Now, I envy those w/ plastic and stainless and no teak to maintain.

Teak Trim

I have removed mine to refinish badly weathered ones and now I maintain annually. An option I considered and have not ruled out is to remove and gelcoat the holes with a good color match. The boat actually looked fine without the trim pieces.
