Teak installation ideas around cockpit?

I am considering adding wood trim, for an aesthetic purpose only, around the outer/upper edge of the cockpit (by winch), and perhaps on the outside bulkhead of the cabin facing stern. It seems that many custom cruising boats have this look… Good idea, bad idea? Teak I suppose is best? Installation advice…(screws?)….? Worth doing? I was told that using cardboard templates beforehand is the way to go... Any pictures that you are proud to share of your boat (exp. 83 30' style) would be appreciated? Thanks in advance.

My question is

where do you get the Teak ? I am looking myself for a Teak Board 1/4 x 10x 30. So far I had no luck. Thanks for any Information. SB

Not the best idea, but it's your boat.

I would not put anything on the exterior of my boat to cause any more maintenance. If you really want to make it a little dressier, you may want to look at PlasTeak. This stuff looks like teak but is actually a plastic (poly) material like Starboard, Kingboard etc. www.plasteak.com

Run don't walk from teak on the outside.

I replaced almost all of my teak outside with gray starboard. The only place I left teak were the handrails(which I covered with Sunbrella) and the eyebrow over hatches(which I would have replaced with stripes if the finish had been smooth. You can see the replacement pieces I made on the H34 Photo Forum.

Another source.

Thai Teak is another source(Related Link). I am gradually replacing my teak with the plastic teak that Steve mentioned. So far the dorade box tops, the traveler base, and the cabin trunk side trim. I have ordered the steps for the stern ladder and have the pieces of 1"x3" for making new handrails. Then another traveler base(cutter) and the winch pads. My only objection is the color. My varnished teak is dark and beautiful. But I think the lighter color will be OK when all the exterior "wood" is the same. You can see that color in the website (http://www.plasteak.com/boating/boating.html).

Ed, you mentioned it so I guess it's

O.K. to comment. The light color is the reason that I did not use Plastek. It just didn't have the color variations that teak has.I don't know if they can make it darker or if it turns darker over time. Regardless, I'm sure that if all is the same, the mind adopts the obvious and it looks great.
