Areas of my original veneer teak-holly floor on my '82 33' Cheribini have begun to to delaminate, probably due to a period of standing water below, because of a faulty bilge pump with the prior owner. The flooring is solid underneath the veneer, but very thin layers of the top are peeling or flaking off at the edges. The flooring looks to be 3/8 inch marine plywood with a teak-holly veneer. I plan on replacing with similar material and would like to know whether anyone has simply glued and screwed new flooring down over the old ? Anyone with a 33' knows that the cuts would be simple, and all sections lay on top of the fiberglas framework with no bulkheads or cabinets sitting on top of the flooring. What say you ???

Remove

We found that not only was the carpet on the bulkheads a source of stale(mildewy) odor on our Hunter 30 but also the teak/holly sole. With years of being damp for various reasons, it was not overpowering but definitely added to the unfresh cabin smell we all experience. We opted to remove it.Plus you now have templates.

Floor

Hi Jeff, I replaced mine a few years ago. All flooring can be replaced without removal of any cabinets. Try and use your old floor as a pattern. You will probably have to do some final trimming when installing. I used PL brand premium construction adhesive and 5200 on a few bend areas( no screws) and to date still holding fine.

Great Place for Teak and Holly Flooring

I too needed a new floor, for my 26' Hunter, found a great place in Ft Lauderdale, FL. I had ordered a new floor panel from Hunter at a cost of $465.00, it was cut to the wrong size and could not be returned. Woodchip had a 4'x8' panel for $85.00 and opened on a Saturday morning just for me. They pulled out about 15 different sheets and let me pick the color that suited me best and even helped me wrap it up for the trip home They also sell the sandable black caulking for the edging which helped to finish the project. Great stuff, cut the panel and finish before installation. Caulk and lightly sand. I recommend them as they worked above and beyond the normal level of service. J. R. Tile with Teak

I found it rather easy to remove the old floor and still be able to use it as a pattern. I did however opt to lay 1 inch square tile at the bottom of the companion way and all thru the galley area. right were the sink counter ends is were the new teak begins. I used silicon to stick the tile in place and caulk to grout in between the tiles. This allows the whole floor to flex without cracking. The tile has been down for three years now with only one cracked tile. This is were all the people stand after swimming to get a drink or food so why not use something that doesn't mind getting wet. Plus it looks GREAT.
