I just purchased a 1983 MacGregor 25 that needs a considerable amount of work. This is my first sailboat. I am looking for a distributor for the teak hatch rails. Please help!!!

Why not just buy the teak and make the rails yourself. It'd be a lot cheaper than buying rails that may or may not fit the boat properly.

I made mine from fake redwood decking from Home Depot and a little sanding and staining and varnishing.

The handles onthe sliders work well when the top is up and the ones on the top make good tie downs for things like the ice chest, boom box or charts.

Another reason for using the fake wood is that it is full deminsion wood.

I agree the fake stuff from the home improvement store is the way to go. I ripped mine and rabbit cut the sliders with regular woodworking tools (cuts like butter). It still looks as good as day one. I did not varnish mine, less gloss.

The rails look wonderful. With all the hand rails on the pop-top do you still lift it by hand?

Thanks

I do raise it by hand but I have found out that the slider must be open for best balance.

The wood starts out heavy when you bring it home but as you cut it, route and sand it , it gets a lot lighter than when you started.

Some things that did change with the rails on the slider---

The mast cruch must be higher so that when pinning the mast it does not hit them and the slider must be closed moving the fwd rail back as far as posible.

The top 'up' supports must be shortened to allow the cover to snapped down and lowering the head room a little. I just removed the rivets and banged the stainless down into the sleaves on both ends this also allowed the boom to clear just fine. The good thing about this mod is that the top now feels more firm when using the hand holds when on deck.

I thought of using pressure struts for lifting, or helping, like the water ballasted boats but their tops open fwd and are secured to the mast and the 25 goes up and back so that some kind of cable or bungee cord would have to be rigged to hold tension on the braces.

Hatch rails

Timebandit, I really like those hatch rails and hand holds you made. Looks great. By looking at the pictures I would've thought it was real wood. Nice work!

Thanks

These are real easy to make.

I use the fake wood decking because it is full dimension wood(1x4--not 3/4x3 3/4 like most wood unless you get a special size).3
