Teak grate for bathroom shower

Some years ago my dad had his shower redone. The idiot tile guy that cast the new floor made it slope too much too close to the drain (think tornado funnel). My dad is now 82. Yesterday he slipped in the shower and ended up in the hospital. (Not worried about my mom, BTW, she refuses to use that shower). So I had the thought that I would make a grate out of teak like a boat swim platform, or cockpit grate. Has anyone here built one and could offer any help on design and construction?

Thanks,

A Walker. Easy to do in any shape or size you want. You will need a table saw, dado head. They get screwed together no glue so a battery powered drill and a 3/8 countersink bit will do the trick. There is a very good article on this I will find it if anyone wants. Let me know. Here are a couple of examples of small ones. These are varnished but you can just use teak if you have it, ipe or whatever and leave it unfinished.

How about using 3/4" starboard. Holes can be drilled into it and add support using same material around the drain to make the grill level.

A simpler method from the beautiful work shown by @Charles Erwin that requires nothing more than a saw and a drill is to take two (typically - more if it gets larger or the structure needs it) wooden runners that are used as the base structure and then you just take flat slats across the top of those, held on by screws. If the screws are put in from the underside they are invisible from the top. This is very easy to fit odd shaped openings. Sorry I don't have a photo....

Just a thought but wet teak is almost as slippery as wet tile.

Don t varnish or CETOL the teak if you want it to be slip resistant. ask me how I know this ? Fell thru my open hatch after slipping on the teak cabin top strips which I foolishly varnished because I thought they would look prettier than the raw grey teak.
