OK several folks around here have been talking about the new "high tech" teak treatment applied by some of the mega yacht builders. Apply a thin coat of epoxy to the teak. Spray 2 coats of clear Awlgrip (hard as nails, lots of UV protection). They are claiming 8 to 10 years even in the Florida sun. This sounds like a fish story to me - a couple of people are actually getting ready to have it done though. Anybody heard of this? (And no this isn't April fools.)

One way...

One way I guess, maybe a one-way application - it'll never come off unless you grind away 1/8" of teak.

No UV protection .....

There is no UV protection in either the epoxy or the Awlgrip .... and the wood cells under this are going to be destroyed by the UV. About 10-15 years ago a lot of folks were touting epoxy encapsulation + 10 coats of oil based varnish (UV) + 6 coats pulyurethane vanish (UV) + several coats of 2-part urethane clear ... it just lasted 5 years then had to be removed with a jackhammer. Moisture would permeate through the wood from the backside, the UV protection in the varnishes would eventually fail .... and you were left with a thick and partly lifted coating that still stuck to the wood but you had to endure major destruction to remove it all.
