I enjoy sailing closehauled the most of any point of sail. There is a fine line between sailing too far off the wind and too close to the wind and this is easy to demonstrate. The drill I use is similiar to the "luff and go" I described in part #1. It enables the new driver to catch the significance between sailing too high or too low very quickly because it involves a very small amount of tiller or wheel movement. The first thing you have to do is correctly set the sails for sailing closehauled. If you do not have the sails set properly the drill loses its effectiveness. Now explain to the new driver which way to turn the wheel or point the tiller to come closer to the wind. Explain that you are going to let the driver actually go too far up the first time and have him start turning. The sails will start to luff but let him kep turning a bit more. This shows them what it feels and looks like to go to far. Next, have them turn the wheel or tiller to fall off but this time explain that you only want him to turn until the sails JUST LUFF. At that point turn back the other way and do it again. The maximum times I've had to do this drill is 5 turns before the driver got it and additionally realized how little they had to turn the rudder to find the fine line.At this point the new driver is ready for the figure 8 drill. Actually, this is a good drill for every experience level. Pick a bouy or some fixed mark and start off on a beam reach toward it. Take the mark on your port side and once clear come back to a beam reach. Sail along a bit and then take an imaginary mark on you starboard side and come back to to a beam reach and proceed to the first mark and do the proceedure over again. This drill can be exhausting for a crew but it is a great tacking drill for skipper and crew. For experienced crews, make it more interesting by shortening the distance between the marks. This drill will help your crew develop team work and also enable the skipper to spot crew tacking weak spots. The goal is to complete the tack in under 30 seconds and not lose more than 1 knot of speed. Another goal is to obviously make the tack smoothly. If it looks like a Chinese fire drill, keep at it till your crew can do it in their sleep and are happy with their performance.
