A lot of the lines on my boat are way longer than they need to be and are hard to keep contained when not in use so I was thinking of cutting the extra long ones down to a better length. I don't know how to do any fancy splices or anything so I was planning on using tape and maybe fire to seal the bitter ends. What kind of tape should I use? Would duct tape work? -Brent

Cutting Lines

Duct tape will look pretty ugly & I'm not sure if it will stay on. A few thoughts: - Self amalgamating tape (buy it at any boat store it's white rubber & sticks to itself) would probably work OK. - If you burn the ends of the cut to seal it, it will hold together just fine by itself. - Buy yourself a reel of "whipping twine", get a book out of the library & teach yourself to whip a line. It's easy, and it looks so much nicer! sam :) C&C 26 Skye II

Electrical tape

I've found that good quality electrical tape (for example 3M) on rope ends lasts a long time. Derek

haet shrinkable tubing

I use heat shrinkable tubing on the ends of the ropes, then cut and shrink the end where you cut it again and it melts the fibers of the rope. Tim Welsh H34 aka CABO WABO

you can buy a rope cutter tip

that fits in a soldering iron for cutting synthetic ropes from defender marine. Or cut with a knife and press the end against hot steel to fuse it together. This seems to work better than using a match or lighter to fuse the end together. I like the cutter, it seems to do a better job.
