I've had the boat for quite sometime now. And its had this blue painters tape on it since I purchased it. I never got around to asking the old owner why he put it on there, I can only assume that he was going to paint the wood and never got around to it. Anyhow, its been on and baking for several years and now I want it off. 1. I can't pull it off in one big swoop, its caked on to the deck and rubber. Anyone have any ideas on removing this tape from the boat without damaging the deck/rubber it is on? thanks Ken

Naptha

I've had good luck with Naptha; soaking the tape scrape gently

"Goo Gone" and other products like it will work. The stuff is petroleum based, I think, so have something on hand that will get the "goo gone" off once the tape mess is lifted. "Black streak remover" will work....

Adhesive remover

West Marine sells a can called Adhesive Remover, I think it might be a 3M product. I use it alot and its amazing. It won't remove the tape immediately, but it dissolves the glue, making the tape come loose, and then makes the glue loose its grip. It doesn't seem to damage anything, I use it all over. By the way, I've had that blue tape leave its gum after a few days. The light green tape called Fine Line is much better. Yes it costs more, but its a little stretchy and does curves better, it gives a sharper line and it comes off.

Acetone

Forget all of the other stuff. Acetone will do it in a moment. "Goo Gone' is a waste of time...It's just kid stuff in an adult world of chemistry. Wear Gloves and don't smoke.

Hair dryer

Start with an hair dryer and a plastic scraper to remove the tape and finish with Acetone

3M Stripe Off Tool

Chech the link below for a auto detailing wheel by 3m called the stripe-off wheel, used to safely and gently remove pin striping and tape stripes, bet it would work wonders on painters tape!!

2nd Acetone

I just cleaned off some 1 month old tape this past weekend. After pulling off most of it, the acetone cleaned up the rest fast. I did wipe it down with water right after to not have the acetone on to long. You might consider "scoring the tape" first to let the acetone get down down and penetrate the glue. IF you do use something that won't dig in and damage your gelcoat (like a plastic scrapper). Be prepared for 2 passes at it and best of luck.

Good Luck

I was once in a similar situation and tried just about every product posted on here. None of them worked well. When the adhesive has been baked on for a few years, the commercial removers will work best, but v-e-r-y slow. Its a combination of chemicals and scrubbing and scraping all at the same time. Its a lot of work, but it can be done. Good Luck
