I am quite used to sailing my 33' Hunter with a big ol' heavy keel. I could jog around it and it would hardly list. I'm rebuilding a Tanzer 16 O/N for trailering around the lakes of Maine. Aside from the obvious differences, any advice on keeping myself out of the drink, trailering practices, up/downwind differences etc? Any advice on a centerboard keeper? it doesn't have one and it could fall in should it turtle.

For you: One hand for the boat as you move around. For your trailer: loading guides, lots of roller, and a good winch. For your sheets and tiller: Upwind, you can cleat them, but keep them in your lap. For downwind, you can cleat them but don't let go of the tiller, and keep your eye on the main to avoid accidental gybes. For your CB: Cleat it down with a downhaul if it has one, if not drill a 3/8" hole above the waterline and a 1/4" ahead of the lowered CB. Insert a wooden dowel to prevent the board swinging back in during a turtle. If you hit something, it will break the dowel not the CB, carry spares. and don't forget to wear your PFD and trail a line if you are sailing solo and regularly cleating your tiller and sheets. That way you have a swimming chance to grab the line when you fall overboard.
