Does anyone have good gouge on a visit to Tangier Island? My draft is 5' and I see by the charts that the water can be a little thin there in the harbor.
Tangier Island and in talking with her local knowledge is essential along with a good depth sounder and a good tide table. edit to add:I was just reading a chesapeake bay cruising guide and that may be your best pilot for planning. The writter was careful to note the range of the tide and the speed of the currents.
Went there last june with my hunter 40. It has a 5 foot draft and I went in the bay side just fine. On the back out to the bay, we did touch, but I think I was a little out of the channel. Scared us but we made out fine.
Went there last July. Came in from the eastern shore side and all was marked very well. Left thru the west side side no problem but not as well marked. The use of the GPS helped. Depending where you dock it can be very interesting if the current is cranking. Set your alarm for 3am so you don't miss the action when they check the shedders.
I have heard from other folks that there is adequate depth to get up into the harbor in Tangier. We only draw 4'-3", but I never once saw anything alarmingly shallow to get my attention on the depth sounder pulling in and out (West Side). Neat place, but kind of strange. We felt weird walking around in the evening after all the "tour boats" left. Parks Marina is where most folks tie up - not much anchoring from what I understand. Bring cash for the marina (I think it is $30 + $5 electric for a boat over 30 feet). I got picked on a good amount from Mr. Parks because I didn't have enough cash and places like these don't take credit cards. He said it was fine and he understood because I was not yet a man, still a boy. Then asked if I have enough money to feed my wife and if not, he would not take my $33 - I was short $2. I got a kick out of it and just laughed - it was in good nature. Call first to make sure your boat can fit - should though.
We have visited Tangier many times in our Hunter 456 (5'6" draft). We have never had a problem with depth from either the East or the West. Channels are well marked. Make sure to inform Parks Marina of your draft as some slips will be less than 5' at low tide.
The watermen check the shedder tanks every 8 hours, 11am, 7pm, 3am. At 3am there are small boats moving all over, radios going, shedders beig checked, ect. After they check the shedders they start to leave in their larger boat to go crabbing. We almost missed it except for an electrical storm which moved thur and woke us up.
